![]() Mayo Clinic reports that some people experience adverse reactions such as an upset stomach, infection, and allergic reactions after drinking kombucha, but this is mostly an issue with home-brewed batches that are at a higher risk of contamination. In comparision, kombucha has such a low amount of alcohol that no one is going to card you when you purchase it. Time magazine notes that beer usually has a 5% alcohol content and wine has 12%. Kombucha does contain a small amount of alcohol, with commercial varieties containing less than 0.5%. Some people believe kombucha can cure or alleviate symptoms of diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and even cancer, but there have been no clinical trials to confirm those claims. Time magazine reports that foods that have gone through a natural fermentation process (yogurt, for example) contain probiotic qualities that may improve digestion and gut health and promote a healthy microbiome, but nutrition experts say more research is needed. It indicates the drink has live cultures in it. This is normal and is part of the bacterial culture. You may also notice that some kombucha has a few visible “floaters” and sediment in it. For this reason, most of my family didn’t really care for the kombucha we had at the family farm, although my sister and I both thought it wasn’t bad, and we appreciated that it wasn’t heavily sweetened. Kombucha may be a bit of an acquired taste, and some people describe it as having a flavor similar to apple cider vinegar, both tart and slightly sweet. The fermentation process leaves behind a bubbly, fizzy drink that is not overly sweet. It’s a rubbery, squishy blob often called a “mother.” The SCOBY is placed in a mix of tea and sugar, which goes through a fermentation process in which, according to my bottle of GT’s kombucha, the SCOBY consumes the sugars and caffeine and “transforms the tea into this naturally effervescent drink once known as ‘the tea of immortality.'” Kombucha is made using a SCOBY, which stands for Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast. Kombucha is a fermented drink made with tea, often with juice, spices, and other flavors added. My focus here will be on the three brands that Aldi stocks all the time in its stores. container (20.5 cents an oz.) as a limited-time offer. In August of 2019, for example, Aldi is selling Health-Ade Bubbly Rose Kombucha and Health-Ade Cherry Berry Kombucha for $3.28 for a 16-oz. I figured now that I’d tried quality kombucha, I could speak some to what Aldi offers.Īldi sells three brands of kombucha as Regular Buy products that are in stores all the time: VitaLife (an Aldi house brand), as well as GT’s and Wonder Drink (two brands that are available at other retailers besides Aldi).Īldi also sometimes sells other brands of kombucha as limited-time ALDI Finds (Special Buys) that are in stores for a short period and then are gone. ![]() I remembered I’d seen bottles of kombucha in Aldi’s refrigerated section. I had never tried the fermented, probiotic-laden drink before, and where better to sample a new food than at a place where you know you’ll be getting a quality product and the real deal? I got a blueberry-lemongrass kombucha and shared it with some other family members so we could all taste it, with mixed reviews. While attending a family reunion at a relative’s sustainable farm this summer, I noticed the farm’s on-site shop sold kombucha. ![]() ![]() ![]() And making sure facilities and suitable areas maintain both physical and mental condition is important. Not only is the space available very limited, but both efficient work spaces and comfortable leisure facilities must be taken into account. The architect’s role in shaping the working and living environment on an offshore production platform has a wider scope than for a building on land. This presented big challenges, but also very special opportunities. ![]() In contrast, the Draugen topsides was to an integrated solution where the various functional areas were built into an overall framework of big steel girders. To preserve the strength of this divider, solutions had to be found which ensured that it had a minimum of penetrations for conducting pipes, cables or ventilation channels. The main rule was that these quarters had to be separated from the drilling and process areas by a solid fire- and explosion-proof wall. That was particularly the case after the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) insisted in 1976 that a safer design was needed for crew cabins and living areas on the Statfjord B platform. Photo: Statoil/Norwegian Petroleum Museum The quarters module was then placed as far as possible from areas which would suffer the biggest consequences in the event of an explosion or fire. Most of the offshore platforms built with a concrete gravity base structure (GBS) in the 1980s were designed with a topsides put together from modular units. He had considerable experience of creating such facilities from his previous job with Phillips Petroleum, and remained with the Draugen project until it came on stream in the autumn of 1993. ![]() ![]() Wally’s jobs consist of daily backpack walks and several weekly bike rides. You can find more job ideas for your active pup in the article I co-wrote with Lindsay from That Mutt – 20 Jobs for My Dog. There are a bunch of different jobs that Feist dogs can perform, such as: It just needs to be an activity that engages them on different levels and that drains them of their energy, again both physical AND mental energy. ![]() Of course it doesn’t necessarily have to be squirrel hunting or any hunting at all for that matter. That means they need a job in order to be fulfilled and not display problem behaviors. Maybe he’s even a full-fledged DenMark Feist – more on that later! Do Feists make good pets?įeist dogs make great pets as long as their physical and mental exercise needs are met. For the moment, I’m perfectly content knowing that Wally is a Feist mix. However, I have yet to order one of those doggie DNA tests, and I’m not sure that I will. She said he might have some Shiba Inu doggie genes besides the Feist ones. I suggested getting in touch with the software maker to add the Feist dog breed, and she said she would!įunny enough, the only one who’s ever taken a stab at guessing what else he might be is our vet. She ended up categorizing him as a Boxer because his size and coat length is similar to that breed. She needed that information for her pricing software which would determine the price of his grooming session.įeist wasn’t a breed option within that software, and she had the hardest time finding a category for him. ![]() When I took Wally to get a bath and a nail trim at a local pet retail store, the lady who checked us in asked what breed he was. Except for one person, no one’s ever heard of the Feist dog breed and interestingly enough, no one ever has any suggestions as to what he might be! Whenever I’m out and about with Wally and someone talks to us, they inevitably ask what breed he is. He’s been a fun addition to my life and keeps me on my toes, but he’s also a great cuddle buddy, awesome co-pilot whenever we’re in the car, and he’s always up for a new adventure! Do people guess that he’s some other breed when they see him? Wally certainly checked those boxes off!Īlthough I felt I wasn’t completely ready for a new dog yet, I’m glad I went ahead and stepped outside of my comfort zone when I adopted Wally regardless of that feeling. However, I knew that I’d eventually want to bring home another somewhat active dog who could come along on daily walks, occasional hikes and road trips. Missy left a huge hole in my life, and for some reason I assumed I’d be adopting another Boxer (mix), and not a breed I hadn’t even heard of! That’s although I didn’t feel 100% ready for a new dog in my life quite yet. However, since he had already been to several homes in his short life, I didn’t feel that it was fair to uproot him yet another time and decided to adopt him myself. My original plan was to foster him for the rescue group I mentioned before until they found a new home for him. When I adopted Wally in early 2019, he was about one year old. More on that in the section later, “Are there different kinds of Feists?” Why I adopted my Feist dog Wally ![]() In general, Feists are small to medium size dogs who weigh somewhere between 10-35 lb and come in 6 different color variations:Īs I found out, the size, coat as well as head shape depend on the respective Feist variety. His body is mostly red, but he has white markings on his chest and neck, all four paws, and on his tail end. So yes, Wally can certainly be persistent, but his overall demeanor is friendly and he’s also gentle with kids. But who knows, his perseverance might just pay off one day! One year and 3 months later, he has yet to catch one. Missy is my late Boxer mix whom I lost to cancer in late April 2018.Īnd sure enough, whenever Wally is in a yard with lots of trees or in the woods, he gets super excited when he spots “his” squirrels, alerts me to their presence, and goes into hunting mode. I laughed when I heard that since squirrel hunting had also been my previous dog Missy’s specialty, and she was nowhere close to a Feist as far as I know. ![]() ![]() A detective named Ray McCoy is tasked with hunting down a group of dangerous Replicants, bio-engineered androids designed to look and act like humans. I address this at the very end of the post in my warning on sight words. While it has its benefits, it's equally important to develop foundational decoding skills and phonetic understanding for independent reading and comprehension of unfamiliar words. However, it's important to note that the sight word approach is no longer considered best practice. Encouraging children to memorize them can boost confidence and fluency, enabling instant recognition and understanding. When it comes to early reading, sight words play a special role. This way, children can quickly recognize and understand these words more easily, which greatly improves fluency. Instead of relying only on phonetics, we learn these words by seeing them often and memorizing them. Sight words are carefully chosen because they don't follow the usual phonetic rules. These are words that appear most often in children's texts. Sight words are chosen based on their frequency of occurrence in the English language. This supports fluency, allowing students to focus on rather than word decoding. The goal is for the word to be identified 'on sight' without phonetic decoding. Sight words, also known as high-frequency words, Dolch sight words, or Fry Sight Words, are commonly used words that early readers are encouraged to recognize instantly. If not, scroll down for fun activities to use with the sight word list included! If you're unfamiliar with teaching kids to read, Here's a quick breakdown of the concepts of Sight Words. This solar array constitutes the largest such rooftop array in the Western Hemisphere. ![]() A 1.2 megawatt peak-power solar array was installed in Spring 2002 on the roofs of the housing units, supplying nearly one half of the jail's power demand during daylight hours. An automatic robotic cart system moves all meals, laundry, commissary items, supplies and garbage through the jail, allowing maximal restriction of prisoner movement throughout the facility. Santa Rita is the third largest jail in California and the fifth largest in the United States, and is considered a "mega-jail", specified to hold 4,000 prisoners at any one time, making it as large or larger than many California state prisons. The facility has 18 separate, self-contained housing units, a "core" building containing central booking, release and administration, and a service building containing the laundry, commissary, kitchen and warehouses. The current 113-acre (0.46 km2) facility is laid out in a modern decentralized "campus" design, similar to many modern prisons, one-half mile long by one-quarter mile wide. Funding for the jail's construction was obtained through state bonds as well as local county matching funds. By 1983, overcrowding had become an issue, and plans were established for the construction of the current $172 million facility, which opened in 1989. The original Santa Rita Jail was constructed in 1947 on a retired WWII training base near the current site. Santa Rita is not the only prison facility in the vicinity as the Federal Correctional Institution, Dublin is located on the premises of Camp Parks. Santa Rita houses the majority of persons arrested in Alameda County, in the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area, and includes the cities of Oakland, Berkeley, San Leandro, Fremont and Alameda.
